17th December 2009 containers arrive- todays update

Morning all,

A great day all round after a frustrating start.
After a morning with a whole bunch of hassle and general administration problems, our first two containers have finally arrived and we have unloaded their contents. The customs rigmarole of the last couple of days has now been sorted and we will be allowed to bring our containers straight to site to opened.
So back to plan A then!

The customs lady followed the trucks in, had a quick glance once we’d opened them up and then left. Hardly seemed worth it after all the paperwork and buggeration.

I can’t tell you how much relief we felt when the first truck arrived at our gate. And then drove in, stopped, and broke down.
The battery on the second truck also gave out after it had entered site so it’s a bloody miracle they got here at all.
We have a great crane crew, and with me on the forklift what could possibly go wrong.

Dave and the contractor have also started setting up our profiles and will commence digging foundations tomorrow. Early indications are that we have a good construction crew who seem to understand what we need and are very enthusiastic.

See photos.
I’ll send another one with a few more pictures.

Finally for today, some interesting weather info on Niger- February to May will be something to look forward to;
Climate
Niger has a tropical dry climate with three main seasons:
From June to September: The rainy season is characterized by violent showers, high humidity and high
temperatures (23 – 35 C). The rains die away in September.
From November to February: The cool season has low humidity and cooler nights (14-30 C). The
harmattan, the dusty wind from the Sahara, may cause reduced visibility from January to March.
From February to May: Very hot, with burning dusty winds (25 – 46 C). The mean maximum in Niamey
is 41 ÂșC. The heat is relieved only by the advent of the rains.
