4th March 2010 Silence of the sheep- today’s update

Morning all,

Stan and Lindsay have now headed home- we had a tearful goodbye at the airport last night, though I think they were tears of relief as they don’t have to put up with me for the next 3 weeks.
Their team have been allocated their tasks and will be digging lateral trenches and other prep work in anticipation for S&L’s return.
The team were concerned to see them go as well- in fact one of the guys even managed to buck the trend and called Lindsay by his name for the first time.
A momentous occasion indeed as usually they are both called Stan by everyone.

Concrete work progresses though still with no urgency. We poured around 4m3 today and we have almost completed the founds in the cold store area though and by the time the contractor leaves on Monday I think we’ll have everything done apart from the wall between lines c and b on GL7. The abattoir will be far from complete though.
We have also excavated out and poured founds in the section we had left and were using as truck access. We now have a timber box over a low section of wall and have covered this with compacted laterite to allow the loader, excavator and trucks in to the coldstore for excavation and backfill.

The chippes arrive tomorrow night and we have a plan to split them and our local team in to two teams- one for abattoir and one for coldstore to try and gain some lost time on the programme.

The ventilation lines are well advanced- see 2658.

The contractor, who didn’t bother turning up to a meeting this morning and now doesn’t answer the phone from either Me or John, has started to dis-establish from the site which is good as he has obviously got the message. One of the mixers left this morning and I’m hoping he’ll use up all his materials in pours today and tomorrow.
We’ve gone round talking to the guys and have told them we don’t want to get them off side with the contractor but if they have no work with others, then we’d be happy to see them back on Tuesday. Most have said they will come in but we’ll see what happens.

A few guys have already left site, but I’ve invited everyone back tomorrow for a get together and as a thank you to all the guys, I’ve arranged to cook them all lunch after our toolbox meeting. This will involve rice and veggies cooked by the lady who comes to site every day, and also as a special treat, a sheep- see attached photo.
I say a sheep, but it looks like a goat to me though they tell me goats have pointy tails which stick up and sheep have long tails which flop downwards.
As we don’t have a big enough fridge, it’s been bought today ready to be knocked on the head and butchered on site first thing tomorrow in time to be cooked for lunch at 12:30
ADR was not too happy about the mess it left behind in the back of the landcruiser- a huge pile of pellets from a short journey from the market back to site.
It is now munching away happily under one of the trees, to which it is tied, blissfully unaware of its fate.
I just hope no-one nicks the bloody thing overnight....

Domestically, villa 3 is in exactly the same condition as when I first saw it about 4 weeks ago and did a list of items to be completed or purchased.
Apparently, it is all on a tight programme and is in hand though given that it hasn’t even been cleaned there’s no way it’ll be ready for Malcolm and co.
We’ll be moving them in to Larabas’s villa instead until the work has been done to our satisfaction.

They will take over satphone A (from S&L) and I’ve also bought them all phone sim cards for local stuff.

That’s all for now,
Me
